Rena, a sharp-tongued widow, had been living with her son at her uncle's house when they sold her off to a lame man as a concubine. She fought back fiercely and soon met Toby, who had lost his wife years earlier and was raising his thirteen-year-old daughter amid a scheming, contentious family. Years ago, when Toby was at his lowest, Rena had helped him.
