Twenty‑three years ago, Katharina Ermine, the wife of Edmund Lynx, the eldest son of the richest family in Ling City, gave birth to a daughter in the delivery room. But the family patriarch, Old Mr. Lynx, had decreed that Katharina Ermine could only marry into the family if she bore a son.
