The story

On the frozen border between rival clans, White Deer healer Erin saves a wounded twelve-year-old Fire Bear boy despite her chief's order to leave him. Her choice costs her the healer's token and her father's support. That night she finds her fiancé Ewan with her sister Hilda and ends the engagement. When Hilda flees an arranged marriage, war threatens. Erin agrees to marry Rolf, the Black Raven heir, after negotiating terms that protect her people. They share a painful past.

Their marriage begins amid suspicion and bloodshed, and an attack reveals a bone-mask conspiracy stirring conflict. Erin treats wounded on all sides while Rolf fears mercy looks weak. Betrayal tests them, and Rolf's brother dies helping the alliance. Rolf spares the conqueror and leaves his fate to a council. After the war, Rolf refuses the crown, and the clans share authority. Erin ends the political marriage, and years later she takes Rolf's hand by choice, building a North where former enemies share the land.
