System 16
The Sega Arcade Game Emulator
The SYSTEM 16 ARCADE EMULATOR is one of my personal favorites. Unfortunately, the developers of this emulator have discontinued further coding, so we will not be seeing any more games added to it.
The program emulates the Sega's System 16 arcade boards used by many Sega arcade games from 1987 to 1989. Games that used this hardware include Shinobi, Altered Beast, and E-Swat. There are more than 20 existing System 16 games. The System 16 board uses a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 10Mhz for the main program code, and a Z80 and YM2151 for the sound. This emulator can also emulate more than just the the single System 16 board because now you can play with System 18 games like Shadow Dancer. Support for several pre-System 16 games like Quartet II has been added. As a final bonus, some dual 68000 games like Hang-On and Space Harrier can be emulated as well.

The 68000 CPU is emulated using the Starscreamer engine programmed by Neil Corlett. It's a very fast and easy to use 68000 emulator fully programmed in AT&T (DJGPP) assembly. The video hardware is also emulated. All the video features are programmed by Li Jih Hwa (known as NAO). The joystick and control buttons are emulated.

NOTE: In order to run this emulator, you must have the emulator itself, and a copy of the ROM's from the original system. The emulator itself is Freeware. The ROM's are copyrighted by the programmer or the manufacturer. You are only legally entitled to do so if you own the actual game, or a PCB/ROM Cartridge from the game that you are emulating.
